2024 Masters Tournament: What TV Channel Streams The Event
This year’s Masters will be the 88th edition of the acclaimed golfing event. The Masters golf tournament takes place at the famed Augusta National Golf Club each spring and is usually the sport’s first Major, but was postponed this year because of the persistent coronavirus pandemic. Everything you need to know about when are the Masters, TV schedule, Tiger Woods tee time, and more.
The Masters was the brainchild of then-amateur golfer Bobby Jones and an investment banker by the name of Clifford Roberts. After completing his grand slam in 1930, Jones bought a plant nursery and, along with architect Allister MacKenzie, brought his dream of Augusta National to life.
The course hosted its first tournament 88 years ago and is now a regular stop on the PGA, European, and Japanese Golf Tours. For the first time, it took place on November 12-15 in the history of the Masters.
The Masters still maintains several long-held traditions such as the awarding of the green jacket to the Masters champion. However, the champion is only allowed to hang on to the coveted green jack for one year, after which he must return it to Augusta National where it is kept in safekeeping in the “cloakroom.”
Reigning champions and amateurs are however allowed to borrow the jackets for special events and such but, otherwise, the jacket remains the property of Augusta National.
Multiple Masters winners must use the same jacket each time, unless, of course, he’s put on some extra weight over the years and has to be refitted.
The Champions Dinner is another proud tradition at Augusta National. It was inaugurated by Ben Hoga in 1952 and is held on the Tuesday before the tournament. And, as the name implies, only past Masters champions are allowed to attend.
1963 saw the beginning of another cherished tradition called the honorary tee shot. Many past golfing greats have participated in the event, including Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklas just to name a few.
Jack Nicklas has won the most Masters tournaments with 6, followed closely by Tiger Woods, who has managed to snag 5 of the coveted green jackets. Arnold Palmer has won four, followed by a slew of three-time winners.
The Masters is always played at the same venue, Augusta National, one of the most esteemed private golf courses in the world. Unlike most private clouds, which are non-profit, Augusta National operates as a for-profit entity, therefore its financial records, members list, and investments are not open to the public.
Unfortunately, Augusta National’s exclusivity has opened it up to charges of racism and sexism in the past. The club didn’t admit its first black member until 1990, and its first woman member until 2012. But what was probably one of its most unusual and inexplicable past requirements was that all caddies had to be black, while barring black golfers from participating until 1975 when Lee Elder broke golfing’s color barrier. But, in 1997, Tiger Woods, an American golfer, finally broke through and dawned the coveted green jacket for the first time.
Because the new schedule meant that the Masters’ would now conflict with some NFL games, last month (August 12) Augusta National made known their intention to hold the event without spectators, in keeping with their agreement with the NFL. consequently, Sunday’s round will begin at 9 a.m. and, barring a playoff, end around 2:30 p.m. that afternoon.
